This is not a defect but rather an aspect of natural hides. Premature splitting happens when rawhide becomes too dry. This can happen in hours if care is not taken.
Common causes are using an incandescent bulb, which creates heat, direct sunlight and heat from a furnace. Heat, dryness causes the rawhide to tighten until it splits to relieve the pressure.
Because of this, there is no guarantee on shade life and once rawhide splits, there isn’t any thing that can be done.
Regular conditioning and a low heat bulb such as a fluorescent or LED can extend shade life.
You should be prepared for splitting to occur, it is part of the experience of using rawhide shades. If you are not willing to accept this fact, you should choose a different shade.
